Bookkeeping Consulting

Helping your streamline your accounting platform

“Accounting for the results of your business activities requires keeping your records in an organized and consistent fashion. While businesses differ tremendously, the basics of accounting critical to running any business remain the same.
–Wolters Kluwer

The advent of accounting systems has made do-it-yourself bookkeeping easier than ever before. Accounting systems save considerable time and minimize errors in reporting with regard to arithmetic. However, these systems create an entirely new set of problems.

Many of my small business owner clients are “do-it-yourselfers” and handle their own bookkeeping. This allows them to save money on a general and administrative cost, and also enables them to have more hands-on knowledge with the finances of the business. This is a good thing in most cases. For clients who are tech savvy and who are capable of handling the basics in the software, they tend to only need assistance with certain things. The following are some common examples:

  • Clearing up account reconciliation errors
  • Cleaning up the balance sheet to reflect actual financial position (sometimes accounts hang out on the balance sheet for years and clients forget how they originated!)
  • Assisting with a first payroll or payroll setup
  • Setting up a QuickBooks company and/or chart of accounts
  • Assisting with invoice and check setup
  • Entering past transactions to get started in the software (current year and/or previous years)
  • Clearing up subsidiary modules such as Accounts Receivable or Accounts Payable

Most of my clients use QuickBooks Online, and others use Xero, but I am also willing to assist clients with other online means of accounting. I do not work with QuickBooks desktop, as I feel it is an inefficient software for remote accounting services. However, I am willing to assist my QuickBooks desktop users with instructions on converting to online if interested.

The Firm’s Process of Providing Bookkeeping Consulting

To remotely assist clients with Bookkeeping consulting (or another online form of accounting system), the client must provide us with accountant access to their accounting system. This enables us to see the full set of books, make necessary adjustments (utilizing journal entries or another module in the software), and provide adjusted financial statements or other reports showing corrected information.

Firm Pricing for Bookkeeping Consulting

The firm charges a rate of $175 per hour for bookkeeping consulting. A minimum retainer is required before services are rendered. Because scope of work differs greatly in this area (based upon client needs), the retainer will differ as well. For problems that can be solved in an hour or less, there is a one hour minimum. For clients who are interested in bookkeeping consulting, please contact us using the information on the “contact us” tab and we can arrange a quote based on estimated scope of work.
